  • Kids & School - Teachers? or the Students?

There is no saying this nicely.  My son is slow but he isn't.  The only way I can describe this is that he reads when he wants to and if something interests him.  I'm not sure how they do the levels except that when he started he was supposed to be at for instance level 12 and he was at level  2.  The teacher isn't overly loved by him, nor is he by her.  At the start of the year she seriously cranked that he was never going to move the levels ahead that the other kids even started at.

Oh I didn't say he's in 2nd grade.  I seriously thought of taking him out of school and home schooling but I don't think I could do it.  So he moved ahead 10 levels which I was amazed.  Unfortunately I don't think the teacher was who said then he wouldn't catch up to where the kids will be when they move up to 3rd grade.  I'm thinking she was politely telling us he should be held back.  It's not going to happen.  He is sitting here reading next to me books he loves.

While if I really thought he couldn't read I would hold him back but he can.  My other son and daughter were a little slow catching on to reading and math but all for different reasons.  Son #1 had a hearing disability that has now been fixed.  My daughter has ADD, which I know is an over used excuse yadah yadah yaday.  However she since being medicated she went from D's & Es to A's & B's and has been accepted to many universities.

I think teachers in a hurry to make the "grade" for themselves, leave too many kids behind.  Children learn at their own rate and many times miss something vital to future learning.  Kids who need extra help and less criticism.  I also think sometimes they need to start back at the begining and find out which step they're missing.

  • My Fiesta Ware The Good & The Bad

I collect Fiesta Ware and my kitchen will soon be done.  I even have a beloved Homer Laughlin dish shelf to put the retired colors on.  We had a small area we didn't know what to do with and it has turned into the perfect place to put my colorful coffee mugs.  I have a brand new fridge and shouldn't complain especially because it was really needed, but I think one of those retro colored ones with a matching stove would be divine.

My whole Fiesta collecting stint started when my Grandma in PA, passed away.  I didn't want to change anything.  I wanted my kitchen to look just like hers did.  I wanted my grandma's dishes and one night while my husband was gone my friend and I made the huge mistake of painting the dining room.  Yep I got that perfect mint green paint that my grandma had on her walls.  My dining room didn't look nearly as nice and I was gonna have some 'splainin' to do over the huge green footprint on the carpet.

When my dh came home he was mad.  Livid mad.  Swore up and down I ruined the house forever and well it's just now getting repainted and that was a good 10 years ago.  My husband one year bought me one of every color of the new Fiesta Ware and matching silverware.  It didn't work.  We used it once and it fell apart and I bawled.  We sent it back and I bought a really nice set of Oneida.

This year my husband got me the new colors out and the new Fiesta Silverware.  The color chips on the handles are falling off and once again my heart is broken.  Once again Fiesta who is one of the longest manufacturers of china and table service has let me down.  Seriously though, for the number of years they've been around a couple of items isn't bad.  Not to mention they outsourced these to be made.

Enough of the complaining you can read more about my Homer Laughlin Fiesta Flatware here.

  • Spring has Sprung at Networking Witches

Spring is here at Networking Witches but I know for a lot of you it's more like summer.  I started my own seedlings this year in hopes that I'll be able to save some money on our already cheap garden.  I can't wait to start planting.  We're still having frost in the evening so I'll plant over Memorial Day weekend.

I'm thinking of trying to can on my own this year.  I'm not sure of the value though other than I will know where the products came from and that they don't have pesticides on them.  Whether using gas or electric to can I'm not sure its cost effective.

Does anyone have plating advice?  Or information on canning?  Also any wild game recipes would be helpful too.

  • Economics of Small Towns

      Great Depression

I see the news, and see the stats, and I have lost my faith in all the newspapers and magazines that I used to think reported truth.  I am  unfortunatly no longer sub’d to the Wall Street Journal who I think were secretly in w/ the puffy penguins ringing the Dow bell.  Come on people grow up you don’t have to video your self ringing the bell.  Get your ass up ( YES freaking stop watching PORN)  and take some action and see how opportunities will open up to you.

    Rise and Fall of Money

I am a lowly mom in a small town.  Our economy has been hit hard.  We lost little factories that made windshields for cars, that did engineering for cars, then there was the huge debacle with the policemans bullet proof vests.  Bad decisions by corporates trickled down and now small town America is in trouble.

City folk <— that’s somethin Rose would say, will pull out of this.  The upswing of the economy is going to hit them first.  Not that it will be a breeze but mostly here we take care of our own.  Our food banks and Mana project are mostly funded by ME and YOU and every other person who is in the lower middle class.  Oh and most in our area grow their own food and share with others SHARE!

Somewhere the middle class *poof* and it was gone.  Then it was left as the haves and have nots aka rich and poor.  Now you may not think I have a lot but I think I’m loaded.  I don’t have money, fancy car (dang mine is still in the shop lol), but what I do have is a family I love, kids that are great and not into drugs and a weekend off is us working on the house and yard with maybe a friend or two.

    fffff

So I’m lost in this post because my head is swimming with tons of caffeine.  (I will post about my New Keurig later) but basically here is my point.  The economy may be getting better but it’s going to be a long time before the little people <– US are going to see the results.  The things we found safety in before this whole thing  and downfall started are either no longer there or you shouldn’t  be puttin’ your eggs in their basket anymore.

There are going to be tons of offers that are too good to be true and that’s exactly what they are they are too good to be true and will bring the economy up for a short time for an even bigger fall later.  So enjoy what you have and in enjoy family and friends.  Instead of going out for dinner have a potluck at your house and you won’t regret it.

  • Earth Day Going Green and Organic

I have been trying to figure out how to start this so I will just jump in like I usually do.  We, Rose (Redneck), and I are celebrating Earth Day.  She is fighting going green and organic tooth and nail.  Fortunately me and my sunny disposition are swaying her from the dark side.

First Organic foods.  Organic foods are good but they are expensive.  Since we are coming into spring think about starting a garden.  My husband’s and my first house was only 500 square feet.  It was small but we had two town lots with it.  Not wanting to turn up the sandy soil there we built a long box and filled it with dirt.  We didn’t have a lot of room and some stuff was planted too close but we ate out of that small garden all summer long.  Now we have just over two acres and we have a very large garden.   I have no incentive to can but my husband does.  I’m happy to freeze our vegetables.  Either way this is organic.

Organic isn’t limited to food, it’s also clothes we wear and bath and body products.  Imagine my surprise when I received my first organic shirt here to review.  My kids fought over it and it was a girls shirt.  My daughter won.  The shirt was soft and comfortable.  A month later we received organic cotton pjs.  They too are the coziest pair my daughter owns.

Organic body products take a little getting used to.  They are different in texture, smell and consistency.  The texture and consistency are different in that moisturizers are not a thick, but the runny-ness helps it spread better.  It takes a second to dry but in that second or two it leaves your skin feeling truly hydrated.  The smells are different because they smell natural and clean.   Some have no scent added and smell good because of the natural mixture to make the product.

Most certainly this doesn’t touch upon all organic products and  I’ll try to cover more this week.  I never thought my family would turn green, and I never thought we would like organic foods and products but we do.  This was not an overnight change and has taken years.  I still want to tell you about our solar powered heat and other great savers.

    Chow!
